Teaching and Learning with Internet Technologies

Search engines- Software support programmes that are available through the internet that searches files and documents for key words and generates those results. It also generates results depending on importance. For example: google, bing , yahoo.

Bookmarking- A method of saving a webpage address. It is sometimes called favourites or internet shortcuts.

Browsers- Software used to access the internet. These include firefox, bing, chrome, internet explorer and safari.

URL- Uniform Resource Locator- This refers to the webpage address.

Pitfalls- 1. openness of the internet 2. Sources may not be credible since anyone can edit 3. Social networking sites can be used as a powerful tool of harassment 4. Exposure to inappropriate information.

Troubleshooting- Modem and Router issues. Modem communicates with the internet service provider and the router shares the connection.

Emails- messages distributed by electronic means from one computer user to one or more recipients via a network

Listservs- an application that distributes messages to subscribers on an electronic mailing list.

Newsgroups- a forum on the Usenet service for the discussion of a particular topic.

Blogs-  regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style.

Wikis- a website or database developed collaboratively by a community of users, allowing any user to add and edit content.

Web quest- A web quest is an inquiry-oriented lesson format in which most or all the information that learners work with comes from the web.

Chatrooms- an area on the Internet or other computer network where users can communicate, typically one dedicated to a particular topic.

Discussion forums- An Internet forum, or message board, is an online discussion site where people can hold conversations in the form of posted messages.

Videoconferencing- Videoconferencing (VC) is the conduct of a videoconference (also known as a video conference or videoteleconference) by a set of telecommunication technologies which allow two or more locations to communicate by simultaneous two-way video and audio transmissions.

Social Networking tools- A social networking service  is an online platform that is used by people to build social networks or social relations with other people who share similar personal or career interests, activities, backgrounds or real-life connections.

Podcasts- A podcast is an episodic series of digital media files which a user can set up so that new episodes are automatically downloaded via web syndication to the user's own local computer or portable media player.

Social Bookmarking- Social bookmarking is a centralized online service which allows users to add, annotate, edit, and share bookmarks of web documents.


Multimedia and Hypermedia- In general, multimedia is the use of computers or related devices to present text, audio, video, animation, interactive features, and still images. Hypermedia is the use of text, data, graphics, audio and video as elements of an extended hypertext system in which all elements are linked, where the content is accessible via hyperlinks.
